Nuts for 100% Recycled Paperboard
When the world’s largest almond producer learned of their Natural Food customers’ concerns for the environment, the successful Sacramento, Calif.- based company sought the “greenest” packaging option possible for their Nut*Thins Crackers. The answer was 100% recycled paperboard.
About Blue Diamond Growers
The 3,200 grower members of Blue Diamond Growers® have been producing the finest quality almonds from the rich fertile valleys of California since 1910, producing nearly one-third of the world’s almond crop.
One such product, Nut*Thins® crackers, is the only cracker made entirely from nuts. Nut*Thins are popular among health-conscious consumers because they are 100% natural, a good source of protein, and free of any transfats, wheat and gluten.
Packaging Challenge
Customers reported that they would like to see Nut*Thins in an environmental friendly package. To respond to customer comments, Blue Diamond Growers searched for packaging options to meet the environmental requests. Based on the preference of the customer base, Blue Diamond Growers felt that the product should be packaged using 100% recycled materials.
A Recycled Solution
Aware of their customers’ concerns for the environment, Blue Diamond Growers needed packaging that would help to reinforce the environmental image that they wished to portray. While there are many options on the market, Blue Diamond Growers wanted to enhance their image without jeopardizing the high-end visual sales appeal of their brand. They turned to 100% recycled paperboard to provide overall package performance and the graphic shelf appeal they needed at a lower cost. Best of all, 100% recycled paperboard is the one package that helps to conserve the environment. Now, with 100% recycled paperboard, Blue Diamond Growers projects an environment-friendly image while maintaining the enticing look of the brand’s packaging.
100% Results
Blue Diamond Growers reached the high expectations of consumers with 100% recycled paperboard. A 2000 RPA-100% study shows that consumers are more likely to purchase a product if it is made from 100% recycle paperboard. The conversion to 100% recycled paperboard occurred in February 2005, and the new packaging was released in May. Blue Diamond Growers is anticipating positive sales results in the near future.
